Introduction
The names used here are tentative. Further studies are needed on the Australian species. Species are difficult to separate and many records are not fully reliable. Morishita & Motomura (2020) described a new species Sphyraena stellata from the Indo-Pacific however its presence in Australia is uncertain.
Authorship of the genus is accepted here as Artedi. Artedi (1793) was largely a reprint of an 1738 publication, which normally would not confer availability. However the publisher added Editio II, indicating a new publication. Authorship is sometimes attributed to the publisher Röse.
