Genus Galaxias Cuvier, 1816
- Galaxias Cuvier, G.L. 1816. Le Règne Animal, distribué d'après son organisation, pour servir de base a l'histoire naturelle des animaux et d'introduction a l'anatomie comparée. Les reptiles et les poisons. Paris : Déterville Vol. 2 pp. 104-351. [183] [as a subgenus of Esox; Esox truttaceus listed as new species in footnote by Cuvier, but no description given and McDowall 1967 regarded truttaceus from that work as a nomen nudum; alternately one could argue that that name was a reference to the generic definition and covered the new species description, making that type species by monotypy; Cuvier also listed truttaceus as a possible synonym of Esox argenteus Forster, which as a conditional assignment has no status, therefore we follow McDowall 1967 here.].
Type species:
Galaxias fasciatus Gray, 1842 by subsequent monotypy, see Gray, J.E. 1842. Three hitherto unrecorded species of fresh-water fish brought from New Zealand and presented to the British Museum by Dr. Dieffenbach. Zoological Miscellany 1842: 73 [73].Secondary source:
