Suborder OSMEROIDEI

Compiler and date details

25 May 2016 - Dianne J. Bray, Douglass F. Hoese, Tarmo Raadik & Matthew M. Lockett

Introduction

Authors have differed recently over the classification of fishes here placed in the suborder Osmeroidei. Johnson & Patterson (1996) presented evidence of a close relationship between salmonoid and osmeroid fishes, and included both groups in the order Salmoniformes. Nelson (2006) separated the group into two orders: Salmoniformes and Osmeriformes. Wiley & Johnson (2010) included both the Osmeroidei and Salmonoidei in the order Salmoniformes, along with the suborder Esocoidei. More recently, Li et al. (2010) and Betancur-R et al. (2014) recognised the orders Galaxiiformes and Lepidogalaxiiformes, and suggested that the Osmeriformes be restricted to the Retropinnidae, Osmeridae, Plecoglossidae and Salangidae. Until relationships are further resolved, we retain the families Galaxiidae, Lepidogalaxiidae and Retropinnidae in the Osmeroidei.
