Introduction
This species was treated as conspecific with Pseudophycis bachus (Forster 1801) prior to 2021, although differences between New Zealand and Australian populations had long been recognised (Kuiter, 1993; Gomon et al. 1994). In a review of the genus Pseudophycis using morphological and molecular data, Gomon et al. (2021) confirmed that although closely related the Australian records of P. bachus do represent a distinct species. They were further able to establish that the first available name for this species is Physiculus palmatus Klunzinger, 1872 (= Pseudophycis palmata), previously treated as a junior synonym of Pseudophycis barbata (Forster, 1801). We follow Gomon et al. (2021) in treating Pseudophycis bachus (Forster 1801) as restricted to New Zealand with Australian records referable to Pseudophycis palmata (Klunzinger, 1872). See Gomon et al. (2021) for a detailed discussion.
