Introduction
This order contains nine families of small to medium-sized, soft-bodied fishes (Cohen et al. 1990; Nelson 2006). Most are deepsea fishes found below 200 m and many are important commercially. Relationships are treated in Cohen (1989), Howes (1991) and Endo (2002). The classification of this group is in dispute and Nelson (2006) has summarised the various arguments. More recent molecular and morphological studies have also presented different views of relationships (Teletchea et al. 2006, Satoh et al. 2006, von der Heyden & Matthee 2008, Roa-Varón & Orti 2009, Wiley & Johnson 2010 and Grand et al.2014). Often those studies treated some of the families recognised here as subfamilies. The Gadidae as recognised here is sometimes divided into 4 subfamilies or families (Gadidae, Lotidae, Phycidae, Gaidropsaridae). Some workers treat the Macrouridae with four subfamilies (Bathygadinae, Macrouroidinae, Trachyrincinae, Macrourinae, see Eschmeyer & Fong 2015).
