Introduction
This species was initially treated as a junior synonym of P. indicus by early workers (e.g. McCulloch 1929). Taylor (1964) recognised it as valid and applied the name to a species of Platycephalus from northern Australia having a caudal fin with bright orange to yellow on the upper lobe, and three jet black bands below. Many authors then used the name P. endrachtensis for the species having these characters.
Recently, following examination of the type specimens, Imamura (2008) has demonstrated that P. endrachtensis Quoy & Gaimard, 1825 is a senior synonym of Platycephalus arenarius Ramsay & Ogilby, 1886. Furthermore it was shown that the species with the characters outlined above should be referred to the name Platycephalus westraliae Whitley 1938, and this species elevated from a sub-species of P. bassensis. No specimens of P. endrachtensis collected between Port Hedland, WA and Cliff Point, QLD, exist in major Australian ichthyological collections (Imamura 2015).
