Introduction

Currently, 40 species in 14 genera are recognised in the Platytroctidae (Eschmeyer & Fong 2014); seven species in five genera are known from Australian waters.

Tubeshoulders are meso-, bathy- and benthopelagic in all oceans. Although very similar to alepocephalids, they differ in having a shoulder organ that produces luminous fluid that can be ejected. Some species have head and body photophores. Maximum length recorded is 30 cm.

The platytroctids were revised by Parr (1960) and Matsui & Rosenblatt (1987). Studies by Sazonov (1976, 1986, 1992) provided additional information. The work of Sazonov (1980) is followed here in replacing the name Searsiidae with Platytroctidae. Sazonov (1999) provided information on the family, and Williams & Sazonov (2008) treated some Australian species. Flynn & Pogonoski (2012) treated species found in the southern Tasman Sea.
