Introduction
As currently recognised the species in Australia is composed of two geographically separate populations, one from Six Mile Island in the Great Australian Bight to the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia. The other is widely distributed from Cape York, Queensland to southern New South Wales and Lord Howe Island. In addition the species is known from Japan and Taiwan. Nelson (1978) tentatively separated the western population as a subspecies Limnichthys fasciatus major. Further work is needed to clarify the identity of these various populations. Misidentifications are common and some tropical specimens may belong to Limnichthys nitidus.
