Ningaloo Reef (22°33'S, 113°39'E) to north of Dampier Archipelago (19°30'S, 117°50'E), WA, Ashmore & Cartier Reefs, Timor Sea (12°15'S, 123°16'E), Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean, and Cape York west of Bligh Reef (12°50'S, 143°45'E) to at least Solitary Islands, NSW (30°01'S, 153°16'E), with juveniles to Montague Island, NSW (36°15'S, 150°14'E), also offshore reefs of the Coral Sea from Holmes Reefs to Lihou Reefs, and Lord Howe Island, Tasman Sea; normally tropical, Indo-Pacific.
