Genus Iniistius Gill, 1862

Introduction

Specimens are rare in collections, often trawled. The species are often found in deepwater or on sand adjacent to coral reefs. In some species only juveniles are observed by divers.

Separated by Randall & Earle 2002 and Randall et al. (2008) from Xyrichtys and other sand-diving razorfishes, apparently based on an unpublished PhD thesis of T. Nyugen. Kuiter (2010) combined most of these genera into the genus Xyrichtys. Westneat (2001) also did not recognise Iniistius, however, Westneat & Alfaro (2005) did recognise the genus. The genera are currently not well defined and further work is needed to resolve the generic classification. Tentatively we follow Parenti & Randall (2000, 2011) for generic placement.
