The species was listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN in 2006. It is listed as Vulnerable in New South Wales.

Extra Distribution Information

Southern QLD (possibly as far north as Townsville, but northern records may be based on other species) to Mallacoota, VIC (149º46´E), Middleton and Elizabeth reefs and Lord Howe Island NSW and Kangaroo Island, SA; temperate, south-west Pacific (New Zealand and Kermadec Islands).
