Introduction
This species has long being treated as a junior synonym of Cymbacephalus staigeri (Castelnau, 1875), however Imamura (2021) established that C.staigeri is a junior synonym of Cymbacephalus nematophthalmus (Günther 1860), a synonymy first suggested by McCulloch (1914) but see also Taylor (1964), Knapp (1973), Paxton & Hanley (1989) and Paxton (2006). Accordingly C.parilis (McCulloch 1914) becomes the valid name of the species previously recognised as C.staigeri as no species having priority over C.parilis exist.
