Introduction
What is currently referred to as Zeus faber in Australia, is either Z. australis or Z. japonicus based on results of a recent study by Ward et al. (2008) showing marked differentiation in CO1 sequence data between North Atlantic and Australasian clades of Z. faber. Although Zeus australis Richardson, 1845 was described from Port Jackson, NSW, the species found in Australasian waters could be Zeus japonicus Valenciennes 1835, as indicated by unpublished 16S sequence data (Dianne Bray, pers. comm.). Ward et al. did not include Japanese samples in their study, and we therefore await the results of further molecular work before assigning the Australian John Dory to either Z. australis or Z. japonicus.
