Introduction

Currently, seven genera and 53 described species are recognised in the Uranoscopidae (Eschmeyer 2014; Eschmeyer & Fong 2014), with five genera and 18 described and several undescribed species known from Australia (Martin Gomon, pers. comm).

Uranoscopids are found in tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. They inhabit a range of bottom types in shallow coastal waters to moderately deep waters on the continental slope to depths of around 900 m, typically burying themselves in sand or mud. Although primarily marine, several species are estuarine and some have reportedly been found in fresh water. They are distinctive in having large bony heads with upwardly directed eyes and very large mouths. Stargazers are small to moderately large fishes, some reaching about 90 cm in length.

The family was first reviewed by Mees (1960) and, although focusing on Western Australian species, Mees provided a family synopsis and a key to the known genera. Pietsch (1989) reviewed the phylogenetic relationships of the family and included generic diagnoses, synonymies and a key to genera. Kishimoto et al. (1988) revised Pleuroscopus and Springer & Bauchot (1994) recognised Xenocephalus as a senior synonym of Gnathagnus. Gomon & Johnson (1999) revised Ichthyscopus, and Kishimoto (2001) treated some species that are known from Australia, including one that, apparently, is undescribed. Gomon (1994, 2008) treated species found in Southern Australia. Vilasri (2013) studied the comparative anatomy and phylogenetic systematics of the family. Thacker et al. (2015) placed the family in the order Uranoscopiformes along with the Cheimarrichthyidae, Ammodytidae, Leptoscopidae and Pinguipedidae.
