Australian Goatfish, Gold-band Orange-barred Goatfish (misidentified as Upeneus asymmetricus)

     Holotype AM I.34384–012, west of Island Head, QLD [22°19.73' S, 150°38.03' E].
    Paratype(s) AM I.24350–001, Rose Bay, Sydney Harbour, New South Wales [33°52' S, 151°15' E]; AM I.34384–004, same as holotype; AM I.34396–011, Port Clinton, South Arm Channel, Queensland [22°34.24' S, 150°44.62' E]; AM I.34398–062, Port Clinton, South Arm Channel, Queensland [22°34.49' S, 150°45.31' E]; NTM S.10803–018, Trimouille Island, Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia [20°24' S, 115°34' E].

 

Introduction

Recent work on the genus Upeneus suggests that many records of U. asymmetricus from northern Australia are probably misidentified records of this species (see Uiblein & Gledhill 2014). Prior to its description this species was also misidentifeid as U. tragula on the east coast of Australia.
