Introduction

Several species of Upeneichthys have been misidentified as this species in mainland Australia. It is currently recognised as endemic to New Zealand, with a single record from Norfolk Island.

Only recorded from Norfolk Island, based on a Queensland Museum specimen identified as Upeneichthys lineatus porosus (Hutchins 1990); subtropical, New Zealand
