Genus Upeneichthys Bleeker, 1855

Introduction

Ben-Tuvia (1986) reviewed Upeneichthys and recognised only one of four previously described species, U. lineatus, but acknowledged the considerable morphological variation of the taxon. Hutchins (1990) described Upeneichthys stotti from Western Australia and split U. lineatus into three sub-species based on the earlier descriptions. Following a detailed anatomical study of the Mullidae, Kim (2002) elevated these sub-species to species level, giving a total of four Upeneichthys species, three of which are endemic to Australia. This is the classification that we follow here.
