Trachurus suarus Rafinesque, 1810 by subsequent designation, see Lesson, R.P. 1830. Dictionnaire Classique d'Histoire Naturelle. Paris : Rey et Gravier Vol. 15–16. [327] (type designated in Volume 16 as Scomber saurus de Linné, which apparently does not exist and is assumed to be Trachurus saurus of Rafinesque) (most workers regard Scomber trachurus Linnaeus, 1758 as the type species by tautonymy, but that species is not a carangid — type species used here follows current usage in the interests of stability; see Berry, F.H. & Cohen, L., 1974 and Whitley 1935 for a detailed discussion of the problem).
