Introduction

Worldwide, the Carangidae include approximately 140 species in 32 genera (Nelson 2006). In Australian waters, 67 species in 22 genera have been recorded.

Carangids are mostly marine fishes found in tropical and temperate waters; some species enter brackish environments. Many species are valuable as food and game fish. They may attain a maximum length of 1.3 m.

Australian species of jacks and trevallies are treated in Smith-Vaniz (1984a) and Gunn (1990). Smith-Vaniz & Staiger (1973) revised Scomberoides and Berry & Cohen (1974) revised Trachurus. Williams & Venkataramani (1978) and Williams et al. (1980) treated some species of Carangoides. Most tropical species are treated in Smith-Vaniz (1999). Relationships are discussed in Smith-Vaniz (1984b), Kijima et al. (1986, 1988), Gushiken (1988) and Reed et al. (2002).

W. Smith-Vaniz and J. Gunn are gratefully acknowledged for their assistance in preparing this family account.
