Species Synaphobranchus kaupii Johnson, 1862

Kaup's Cut-throat Eel, Kaup's Arrowtooth Eel

Compiler and date details

20 April 2011 - Dianne J. Bray, John R. Paxton, Jennifer E. Gates & Douglass F. Hoese

Introduction

Presence and distribution of this species in Australia is uncertain. The single record from QLD is based on low ID accuracy (Last et al 2014). Records from NSW based on specimens have been recently re-identified as S. oregoni, and observations from NSW are probably misidentifications (K. Graham, pers. comm.). Records from the Tasman Sea are uncertain, a recent work on New Zealand fishes does not include this species (Smith & Stewart, 2015). Further work is required on this genus to properly determine the distribution of this species.
