Introduction
The subdivision Elopomorpha includes fishes that have a ribbon-like larva referred to as a leptocephalus larva. Nelson (1994) recognised four orders. The spiny eels previously placed in the suborder Notacanthoidei of the Albuliformes, are assigned here to an order based on the work of Forey et al. (1996). Nelson et al. (2016) recognised the group as a Cohort under the Division Teleosteomorpha, which was proposed previously for modern and fossil groups and Subdivision Teleostei. Wiley & Johnson (2010) also recognised the group as the Cohort under the Infraclass Teleostei.
