Genus Scorpaenopsis Heckel, 1837

Type species:
Scorpaena nesogallica Cuvier, 1829 (Bleeker, 1876, designated Scorpaena gibbosa Bloch & Schneider 1801, which was not an included species, as type (p.4) but treated nesogallica Cuvier 1829 and gibbosa as synonyms (p.28)) by subsequent designation, see Bleeker, P. 1876. Genera familiae Scorpaenoideorum conspectus analyticus. Verslagen en Mededeelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen (Afdeeling Natuurjunde). Amsterdam 2 9: 294-300 (Scorpaena nesogallica is a synonym of Scorpaenopsis gibbosa.).
Introduction
The genus was revised by Randall & Eschmeyer (2001), with additional information provided by Motomura (2004) and Motomora & Shinohara (2005). Some specimens previously had been misidentified and some distribution records included here may be inaccurate.
