Introduction

The subfamily Scorpaeninae includes 17 or 18 genera (Mandrytsa 2001) and approximately 175 species. Currently 59 described species in 12 genera are known from Australia and external territories. Numerous additions and name changes have resulted from work of Motomura.

Randall & Eschmeyer (2001) revised the genus Scorpaenopsis, but they examined little Australian material. Many Australian species are covered by de Beaufort & Briggs (1962), Chen (1981) and Poss (1999).
