Introduction
In a revision of the Scorpaena cardinalis group, Motomura et al. (2011) found S. jacksoniensis to be a valid species. They determined that, in Australia, S. cardinalis occurs in the Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island regions in the Tasman Sea (also northern New Zealand), and is not found in coastal waters of mainland Australia. As a consequence, the early literature and common names in use for these species have been confused.
