Species Scarus psittacus Forsskål, 1775
Palenose Parrotfish, Common Parrotfish
Type data:
Neotype USNM 201805, north of Jidda, Saudi Arabia, Red Sea (type locality originally Jeddah, Red Sea).Subsequent designation references:

Soc. London 63(3): 239–248 fig. 1 (242) disagreed with neotype selection and selected BPBM 19789 as a neotype, but their selection has no validity).

Generic Combinations
- Callyodon forsteri (Valenciennes, 1840) [it is possible that Whitely 1964 was following Fowler & Bean 1928 usage of this name; Fowler & Bean 1928 regarded Callyodon forsteri as a senior synonym of Chlorurus capistratoides]. —

Introduction
It should be noted that use of this name is based on the neotype selection of Randall & Ormond (1978), which technically was an invalid designation, because Schultz (1969) had earlier designated a different specimen as neotype which would make Scarus psittacus a junior synonym of Hipposcarus harid (Forsskål 1775), a species confined to the western Indian Ocean and Red Sea. We retain the name here in the interest of stability.
