Introduction
This cottoid family contains 4 species in three genera, most confined to the continental slopes in the North Pacific, ranging from Japan to Alaska and south to California. Only one species is known form Australia. Nelson (2006) treated the Ereunidae as a separate family. Smith & Busby (2014) combined the family with the Rhamphocottidae. That classification was followed by Nelson et al. (2016). Tentatively with follow that classification. However, further studies are needed, as Voskoboinikova (2015) considered the two groups to be distinct and not closely related based on morphological analyses.
