Introduction
This species was described by Whitley (1938) as Trudis bassensis westraliae, a sub-species of P. bassensis, and was long treated as a junior synonym of that species. Imamura (2008) removed the taxa from synonymy and elevated it to a valid species, Platycephalus westraliae. Prior to this records of this species were widely referred to as P. endrachtensis (see Introduction to P. edrachtensis).
