Species Pempheris mangula Cuvier, 1829

Black-edged Sweeper

Introduction

Koeda et al. (2014) provided information on thie species and suggested that records of P.mangula from the western Pacific are possibly based on misidentifications of other species. However, Randall & Bineesh (2014) selected a neotype and that paper came out one week before another specimen was designated neotype by Koeda et al. (2014). Data from the two publication suggest that the two neotypes may not belong to the same species. We are unable to resolve the conflict here, but include identifications of Australian material by Koeda et al. (2014). Other studies (Randall et al. (2014), Randall & Bineesh (2014) did not treat material from Australia.
