Neotype ZSI 2489 (Neotype (plus "paraneotypes") selected by Randall & Bineesh 2014 [30], but a neotype was also selected by Koeda, K., Yoshino, T., Imai, H. & Tachihara, K. 2014. A review of the genus Pempheris (Perciformes, Pempheridae) of the Red Sea, with description of a new species. Zootaxa 3793(3): 301-330[309] as BPBM 41095, published 6 days later), India, Coromandel coast, Visakhapatnam, rocky area outside harbor.
Introduction
Koeda et al. (2014) provided information on thie species and suggested that records of P.mangula from the western Pacific are possibly based on misidentifications of other species. However, Randall & Bineesh (2014) selected a neotype and that paper came out one week before another specimen was designated neotype by Koeda et al. (2014). Data from the two publication suggest that the two neotypes may not belong to the same species. We are unable to resolve the conflict here, but include identifications of Australian material by Koeda et al. (2014). Other studies (Randall et al. (2014), Randall & Bineesh (2014) did not treat material from Australia.
