Genus Pempheris Cuvier, 1829

Introduction

The identification and distribution of several Pempheris species is currently unclear and the genus requires complete revision (Koeda et al. 2014), Mooi & Randall (2014), Randall et al. (2014). Mooi & Randall (2014) provided information on types. In a series of papers (Koeda et al. 2014, Randall & Bineesh 2014, Randall et al. 2014 and Randall & Victor 2015) major disagreements developed resulting in confusing over the correct identity of Australian species. Those works treated the Red Sea and Indian material. Only Koeda et al. (2014) included identifications for Australian material. Randall et al. (2014) and Randall & Victor (2015) disputed several conclusions in that work, but did not treat Australian material. That work directly attacked Koeda, sometimes simply dismissing conclusions in his paper as errors with little explanation. The work (Randall et al. 2014) also had errors of nomenclature, although those apparently do not affect Australian species. Consequently the information presented here is tentative for some species. Many species were treated by Mooi & Jubb (1996) and Mooi (2000). Genetic work has indicated additional species, but different studies have produced different results using different genes. The genus contains at least 25 species (Mooi & Randall 2014), but Randall & Victor (2014) described 34 new species from the western Indian Ocean. Further work is needed to validate those species and the work only has an effect on the use of the name Pempheris tomnagai in Australia..
