Introduction

As recognised here, this species is distinctive and widely distributed in Australia. Vari (1978) regarded octolineatus as a junior synonym of Pelates sexlineatus. Further work is needed on the genus and if the type of octolineatus is the same species as sexlineatus then the name profundor is the next available name. Also, at present this species is found in tropical and temperate waters, and it may be possible that more than one species is involved.
