Genus Pelates Cuvier, 1829

Introduction

Currently three species are recognised from Australia (Kuiter 1996). Vari (1978) appears not to have been aware of the third species, recognised here as Pelates octolineatus. Further work is required on this genus in Australia to determine the number of species and their distribution in Austrlian waters; the application of the appropriate names also needs to be determined. We follow Vari (1978) in recognising Helotes as a synonym of Pelates. However, that creates a secondary homonym of the species from tropical regions, sometimes referred to as Helotes sexlineatus, consequently we use the name P. octolineatus for that species.
