Introduction
Randall & Myers (2002) separated the species into three largely allopatric species: P. trifascaitus from the Indian Ocean and Indonesia, P. crassilabris from Western Australia to the western Pacific and P. insularis from the central Pacific. Allen & Adrim (2003) also recorded P. trifasciatus overlapping with P. crassilabris in Indonesia. Records of P. trifasciatus (often as Parupeneus bifasciatus) from Western Australia and Queensland appear to have been based on Parupeneus crassilabris (Valenciennes, 1830). Some Australian records are based on misidentifed P. multifasciatus.
