Introduction
This species has a major gap in distribution in Australia, missing from much of northern Australia. Further work is needed to determine the distinctiveness of the south-west Pacific form, sometimes referred to as Parupeneus signatus (Günther, 1867) as noted by Kuiter (1993)(see also Randall 2004).
