Introduction

Misidentified by earlier workers as P. trifasciatus, an Indian Ocean species, and as its junior synonym P. bifasciatus (see Randall and Myers 2002, Randall 2004).

Ningaloo Reef, WA (22°42'S) to Timor Sea northwest of Darwin, NT (10°09'S, 129°33'E), and Portlock Reef, QLD (9°44'S) to Sydney, NSW (33°51'S), also Rowley Shoals (17°30'S) and Scott Reef (14°05'S), WA, Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island (123°34'E), Timor Sea, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island; tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
