[329] [authorship sometimes referred to as Kuhl & Hasselt, 1829 in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1829), who attributed the name to them, but the description was probably provided by Cuvier as he indicated that the specimens was sent to him by Kuhl & van Hasselt].

Introduction
Paxton et al (1989 and Allen et al (2006) included Scorpaena burra Richardson, 1842 as a synonym, but it is now treated as a nomen dubium (see Incertae sedis) and also Scorpaena stokesii Richardson, 1846, Scorpaena bellicosa Castelnau, 1875 and Scorpaena bynoensis Richardson, 1845, but Motomura et al. (2009) regarded those names as synonyms of Parascorpaena aurita. Because of the confusion it is uncertain if the names Parascorpaena aurita and P. picta have been confused in early records.
