Introduction

The Psychrolutidae comprise 35 species in eight genera (Nelson 2006). In Australian waters, four described species in two genera have been recorded. In addition two species and an additional genus are known from Macquarie Island. Also included here is Psychrolutes microporos Nelson, 1995 taken from the Norfolk Ridge, just south of the Norfolk Island Province and it is likely to occur within the Province.

Blobfishes are found in shelf and slope temperate waters of all three major oceans. These benthic fishes are characterised by having a large head and pectoral fins and a soft, flabby body. Maximum size is 50 cm.

The Psychrolutidae were discussed by Nelson (1982), who presented a key to 20 recognised species, including those in the previously distinct Cottunculidae. Nelson (1977) redescribed one of the Australian species and subsequently (Nelson 1999) presented a key to genera and species of Psychrolutes from the Western Central Pacific region.
