Family HYPOGASTRURIDAE Börner, 1906

Compiler and date details

Penelope Greenslade, School of Botany and Zoology, Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Introduction

This is a small and relatively well known family with seven genera and 29 species and subspecies in Australia. No Australian species have yet been described in two other genera, Willemia Börner, 1901 and a new undescribed genus near Acherontiella Absolon, 1913. The genera Hypogastrura and Ceratophysella are predominantly Holarctic in distribution and it is probable that all species in Australia have been introduced relatively recently. Only the genera Triacanthella and Xenylla are known to have species endemic to Australia. Xenylla was studied by Gama (1974, 1979, 1981) and it is unlikely that there are many more species to be added to those listed here. There are, however, undescribed species in the genus Triacanthella. Species of Hypogastrura and Ceratophysella are found mainly in cool, humid climates, in habitats that have been disturbed by man. Triacanthella has a boreal and austral distribution, while Xenylla is cosmopolitan and occurs in most parts of Australia, including tropical areas. Members of this family are generally found in leaf litter and the upper levels of the soil; a few species occur in caves and intertidally, while some Xenylla species are found under bark. A key to Australian species of Xenylla is given by Gama & Greenslade (1981).

Diagnosis

Characterised by: thorax I developed and setose, mandibular plate present, microsetae s' absent on thorax III, maxilla with stout cardo between stipes and fulcrum, anal spines usually present.

Family BRACHYSTOMELLIDAE Stach, 1949

Compiler and date details

Penelope Greenslade, School of Botany and Zoology, Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Introduction

This family is treated as a subfamily by many authors (see Massoud 1967), but Stach (1949), Fjellberg (1985) and Deharveng (2004) use the name at family level. Eight genera and 21 species have been recorded from Australia, but there are many more species and a few genera yet to be described. One genus, Rapoportella Ellis & Bellinger, 1973, is known only from Kangaroo Island in addition to southern South America from where it was described. The family is very well developed in southern, humid regions of the continent. Many species are associated with fungal fruiting bodies and probably feed for part of their life cycle at least exclusively on fungal spores (Greenslade et al. 2002); others are found in leaf litter and on grasses in damp situations. The geographical distribution of the family is documented by Najt and Weiner (1996) and the phylogeny examined by Najt et al. (2005).

Australian representation is reviewed by Greenslade (2018), who recognised seven genera and detailed Cassagnella.

Diagnosis

Characterised by: thorax I setose, mandibular plate absent, mandible completely absent, maxilla without lamellae but with several teeth.

Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

Introduction

A brief summary is given by Greenslade (2018). In a molecular study that compared specimens from Australia and South Africa, Janion-Scheepers & Deharveng (2022) demonstrated that an undescribed species they refer to as Brachystomella cf. platensis is present in both locations.

Excluded Taxa

Misidentifications

BRACHYSTOMELLIDAE: Brachystomella parvula (Schäffer, 1896) [incorrectly identified by Womersley (1933); Womersley (1934); Womersley (1937); Womersley (1939); King, Hutchinson & Greenslade, Penelope (1976); most specimens are Brachystomella platensis Najt & Massoud (1974), see Greenslade, Penelope & Najt, Judith (1987)]

Family NEANURIDAE Börner, 1901

Compiler and date details

Penelope Greenslade, School of Botany and Zoology, Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Introduction

Nineteen genera and 46 species of Neanuridae are recorded from Australia, but many more species and some genera are yet to be described. Three further genera from Australia, Cephalachorutes Bedos & Deharveng, 1991, Pseudachorutella Stach, 1949 and Micranurida Börner, 1901, are without described species here. The genus Yuukianura Yosii, 1953 also occurs in Australia but no described species have been recorded (Deharveng & Greenslade 1992). Lubbock (1899) described Anoura spinosa (= Holocanthella spinosa) erroneously as from Australia; Dendy (1901) corrected the locality to New Zealand. Pseudachorudina kosciuski (Giant Inky Springtail) is a nomen nudum (Green & Osborne 1994).

Four subfamilies are recognised and all occur in Australia. They differ in the morphology of their mouthparts and there is considerable specialisation of these structures in this family resulting in different feeding habits. All the subfamilies are found mainly in the more humid regions of Australia and there are few species in the arid zone. The Frieseinae are a small subfamily with only two genera, one of which is cosmopolitan and has a number of species with localised distributions in Australia. The Neanurinae is particularly well developed in south-east Asia and extends to humid parts of eastern Australia. The Pseudachorutinae are a poorly known group and the Australian fauna probably contains many new genera and species. Finally, the Uchidanurinae are an ancient subfamily but not well characterised, associated with decaying logs in temperate and subtropical rainforests and with two genera which are endemic to Australia. The species are large and spectacular and are of considerable biogeographic and phylogenetic importance.

Diagnosis

Characterised by: thorax I setose, mandibular plate absent, maxilla present with long slender cardo between the stipes and the fulcrum, maxillary palp not developed, microsetae s' absent, empodial appendage absent.
