Introduction
The Perryenidae comprises Perryena leucometopon (Waite 1922), a rare scorpaenid endemic to southern Australia. The species has a compressed scaleless body tapering to a moderately narrow caudal peduncle, a long narrow snout with a small mouth at the tip, wide gill openings with gill membranes free from the isthmus, two preopercular spines, a long-based dorsal fin originating above the eye, a short-based anal fin and large pectoral and pelvic fins. Little is known of the species; it attains a length of 16 cm.
Honma et al. (2013) erected the monotypic family Perryenidae based on an osteological and myological study of Perryena leucometopon. Ishii & Imamura (2008) in a study of congiopodid phylogenetic relationships had suggested that Perryena was not closely related to the Congiopodidae. Previously, most authors (Paxton et al. 1989; Gomon et al. 1994; Paxton et al. 2006; Gomon 2008) followed Whitley's (1940) original placement of the genus Perryena in the family Congiopodidae. Mandrytsa (2001), however, placed Perryena in the family Tetrarogidae, based mostly on radiographs of misidentified specimens of Congiopodus leucopaecilus (see Honma et al. 2013).
