Introduction
Records of Oreochromis aureus in Australia are probably based on a polymorphic strain of O. mossambicus with genes from some or all of the species O. aureus, O. niloticus and O. hornorum. The strain co-occurs with Tilapia mariae but is reported not to reproduce with that species (see Mather & Arthington 1991, Arthington et al 1999). However, the species is widely cultured including in Asia and could be introduced into Australia.
Distribution
States
Queensland
Extra Distribution Information
Recorded from estuarine and fresh waters north of Cairns, QLD, but probably based on a hybrid of O. mossambicus with genes from one of three additional Oreochromis species, including O. aureus (see Mather & Arthington 1991, Arthington et al 1999)
Introduced from Africa via aquarium trade.
