Family NOTODONTIDAE Stephens, 1829

Introduction
[updated from Edwards, 1996: 272]
The Notodontidae have traditionally included the subfamilies Thaumetopoeinae and Notodontinae but these were sometimes accorded family status. Miller (1991) divided the family into eight subfamilies. The composition of many of these subfamilies remains uncertain as the features most useful in their definition are characters of the early stages and unknown for many genera. Here the subfamilies Thaumetopoeinae and Notodontinae are retained and the Pygaerinae recognised until the Australian genera can be studied in more detail.
The Indoaustralian Notodontinae were treated in Setiz's Macrolepidoptera of the World by Gaede (1930), but the Thaumetopoeinae were included as part of the Lymantriidae in this work by Strand (1929). The world fauna of Notodontinae and Thaumetopoeinae were listed in Lepidopterorum Catalogus by Gaede (1934) and Kiriakoff (1970). The Notodontinae of the Indoaustralian region were treated in Genera Insectorum by Kiriakoff (1968). Although Kiriakoff's volumes are recent many taxonomic problems were unresolved. Edwards (1996) resolved many nomenclatural issues within the family and proposed a number of new synonymies.
The Australian fauna was revised by Turner (1922) who subsequently described a few more genera and species.

The genus was discussed by Joicey and Talbot (1917). Litoscelis Turner, 1944 was established in the Noctuidae. … While M2 in the fore wing arises closer to M3 than to M1, an epiphysis is present in the female and the ocellus is well developed, all features unusual in the Notodontidae, it does have a ventrally directed tympanum and Sc+R1 is approximated to Rs in the hind wing, which are normal in the Notodontidae. The biologies of the species are unknown)

This generic name was used by Swainson (1851) without included species. It may be argued that the genus was not validly described but it does, in minimal fashion, fulfil the requirements of the Code. On hearing Swainson's 'description' a chemist, familiar with insect secretions, instantly identified the species. The species Bombyx banksiae Lewin, 1805, [was] here placed in the genus and designated as type species)

Epicoma was divided into three genera by Kiriakoff (1970) and the male genitalia of some species are very different. However, if all the species are considered there is a gradual change in some genitalic characters while other characters run counter to Kiriakoff's (1970) groupings. If the genus is to be subdivided then more than three genera would be necessary. Nevertheless there are two well defined groups: E. argentata (Walker, 1865) to E. chrysosema Turner, (1922b) form one (the genus-group name Marane Walker, 1865 is available for this entity) and E. zelotes Turner, 1902 to E. poratificalis Rosenstock, 1885 form another (the genus-group name Epicoma Hübner is available for this entity). E. protrakens (Lucas, 1890) cannot be placed in Tearina Kiriakoff, 1970 with the unrelated Tearina nigrolineata Joicey, Noakes & Talbor, 1916) from New Guinea)

[272] (Note #510: Teara Walker, 1855: There has been confusion in teh application of this name in the literature. The correct type species is Teara contraria Walker, 1855, designated by Kirby in July 1892 (Kirby 1892). The species Teara variegata Walker, 1855 was designated by Swinhoe subsequent to October 1892 (Swinhoe 1892). Kirby's earlier designation must take priority. Note #511: Adelaidina Kiriakov, 1969: The taxon Ochrogaster lunifer Herrich-Schäffer, [1855], as used here includes a complex of species. They differ in details of the genitalia, characters of the larva and larval behaviour and foodplant. These characters have not, however, been correlated into any satisfactory pattern. Most, or all, the species exhibit a large range of variation in the fascies of the adult and most names listed here have been given to different morphs. Kiriakoff (1969) differentiated Adelaidina dispar Kiriakoff, 1969 on the basis of larval behaviour, genitalia and wing venation. The holotype has the wings partly expanded and the wing venation may be unreliable as the character varies within a series. The larval behaviour described applies to most of the coastal populations of southeastern Australia where many of the earlier holotypes originated. In view of the doubt as to the application of all the species-group names they have been placed together until a thorough, field-based revision is attempted. The one species clearly differentiated on adult characters has no available name)

The genus Carama Walker, 1855 was established to include a single species identified by Walker as Arcturns sparsballi Curtis, 1830. Walker misidentified specimens of what is now Carama walkeri Butler, 1877 (Megalopygidae) from Brazil. Carama Walker is treated in the Megalopygidae by Fletcher. and Nye (1982). This is a case of misidentified type species which under the Code, Art. 70(a), should be referred to the Commission. The genus is not listed here as it is clear that stability is best preserved by retaining Carama Walker in the Megalopygidae)
