Introduction
Macquaria ambigua is treated here as a single species, but genetic work has indicated that it is probably a composite of several subspecies or species (see Allen et al. 2000 and Pusey et al. 2004). Allen et al. (2000) and Pusey et al. (2004) recognised Macquaria ambigua oriens from eastern Queensland and Macquaria ambigua ambigua from other areas; a distinct form is also present in the Lake Eyre Basin. Further work will undoubtedly change the classification of this species.
Distribution
States
New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria
Extra Distribution Information
Scattered coastal rivers from Fitzroy River, QLD to Richmond River, NSW throughout the Murray-Darling and in the internal Bulloo and Lake Eyre drainages, introductions in NT, QLD and NSW have confused the study of natural distributions, but those to WA have been unsuccessful; temperate.
Australian Endemic.
