Introduction
Material from Western Australia is tentatively identified here as Hyporthodus septemfasciatus. Yearsley et al. (1999) stated that the Western Australian material differs genetically from material from eastern Australia. They recognised two species on the east coast (Hyporthodus ergastularius and a second, which is now considered to be H. octofasciatus). Further studies are needed to determine the identity of the Western Australian material. The figure given in Hutchins & Thompson (1983) is more similar to H. septemfasciatus. Craig et al. (2011) treated Hyporthodus septemfasciatus as restricted to the north-west Pacific.
