Introduction
Prior to the description by Randall & Rocha (2009) this species was referred to as Halichoeres ornatissimus, a species now considered to be endemic to the Hawaiian and Johnston Islands (Randall & Rocha 2009, see also Kuiter 2010). All pre-2009 records of Halichoeres ornatissimus in Australia actually refer to Halichoeres claudia.
