Genus Halichoeres Rüppell, 1835
- Halichoeres Rüppell, W.P.E. 1835. Neue Wirbelthiere zu der Fauna von Abyssinien gehörig. Fische des Rothen Meeres. Frankfurt Vol. 1, pp. 1–28, pls 1–7. [16].
Type species:
Halichoeres bimaculatus Rüppell, 1835 by subsequent designation, see Jordan, D.S. 1919. The genera of fishes. Part 2. Stanford University Publications, University Series 36: 153-284 [184].
Introduction
Kuiter (2010) split members of Halichoeres into five separate genera based on the results of molecular studies (e.g. see Barber & Bellwood 2005). In addition to Halichoeres he placed various species into two new genera Biochoeres and Julichoeres, and two genera previously treated as junior synonyms Hemitautoga and Hemicoris. The arrangement of Kuiter (2010) has not been widely accepted by other workers (e.g. Parenti & Randall 2011) and while we include all of the generic combinations from that work, and agree that the genus is in need of revision, we follow Parenti & Randall (2000) in retaining the placement of the various species in the genus Halichoeres until further work can be conducted to support Kuiter's (2010) arrangement.
