Introduction
Ma & Craig (2018) placed this species in the genus Mycteroperca based on genetic studies. However, no distinct morphological characters uniquely separate the two genera as recognised by that study. That separation makes identification to genus difficult. Tentatively we retain the species in Epinephelus.

North-western WA (19°01'S, 117°12'E) to north of Darwin, NT (130°07'E), Coral Sea off northern Great Barrier Reef (between about 15° and 18°S), north of Cato Reef (22°40'S, 155°30'E), and north of Brunswick Heads, NSW (28°21'S, 153°39'E); tropical, Indo-west Pacific; often identified incorrectly as E. morrhua.
