Introduction

The species is very similar to Epinephelus macrospilos and records of both species need confirmation. This species was recorded from Scott Reef, Western Australia (Hutchins 2001), but the record needs confirmation and is not listed from Australia by Heemstra & Randall (1999). Allen & Erdmann (2012) listed the species from India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia only, but records exist for Mauritius also.
