  Type species:

   Muraena echidna Gmelin, 1789 by absolute tautonymy (some workers regard the Forster description as a combined one of Echidna variegata Forster 1788, but we follow (Böhlke, E.B. & Randall, J.E., 2000) [216] for the type species by virtual tautonomy).
