Introduction

The family Euclichthyidae currently comprises a single, benthopelagic species, found in Australia and New Zealand (Cohen 1984, 1990). Undescribed species are known from Australian waters and the family needs revising. We follow Cohen (1989, 1990) in recognising the family. Paxton et al. (1989) included the family with the Moridae. Relationships were discussed by Fahay & Markle (1984) and Markle (1989). Euclichthyids reach a length of 35 cm.
