Species Diploprion bifasciatum Cuvier, 1828

Barred Soapfish, Two-banded Soapfish, Yellow Emperor

Miscellaneous Literature Names

  • Diploprion bifasciatus Cuvier, 1828 [species name matching gender of genus].

Introduction

The name was originally proposed as Diploprion bifasciatum. The generic name Diploprion is masculine and the species name should have been fasciatus. However Cuvier stated in the description that the names were proposed by Kuhl and van Hasselt and that "We religiously keep these names both generic and specific; it is a duty on our part to [these] men..." We retain the name D. bifasciatum, which is far more common in the literature.
