Introduction
Many authors have considered C. conspicillatus species to be a junior synonym of C. flavofasciatus with a wide Indo-Pacific distribution (Smith 1963, Dawson 1977, 1985). Herald (1953) treated Red Sea and central Pacific populations as distinct subspecies with C. flavofasciatus conspicillatus (Jenyns 1842) from the central Pacific, and Kuiter 2000 treated ,C. conspicillatus as a valid species from the Coral Sea to the central Pacific, with C. flavofasciatus restricted to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. Tentatively we include records here from Cocos (Keeling) Islands as C. flavofasciatus.
